Personality as predictor of psychological well-being in adolescents

In this study we explored the predictivness of personality for psychological well-being in a sample of adolescents. The sample used in the study included 223 high-school students (82% female), aged between 16 and 19 (M=16.9, SD=0.51). Data was collected during school time in two high-schools in Zagr...

The sample used in the study included 223 high-school students (82% female), aged between 16 and 19 (M=16.9, SD=0.51). Data was collected during school time in two high-schools in Zagreb, and adolescents filled in a battery that included demographic data, Five Factor Personality Inventory (FFPI ; Hendriks et al., 1999), Index of Well-Being and Index of General Affect (Campbell et al., 1976), The Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) and shortened UCLA Loneliness Scale (Russell & Cutrona, 1988). Data was analyzed using hierarchical regression analyses. In the first step we entered gender and age as predictors, while in the second step we entered five personality dimensions. As criteria we used score on loneliness scale, self-esteem scale, index of general affect and index of well-being separately. However, since PCA showed that one factor with an Eigenvalue of 2.84 accounts for 70.92% of the variance, we retained that factor score labeled as psychological well-being and also used it as criteria in our analyses. Results are in line with previous research and indicate that Extraversion and Emotional Stability are the strongest predictors of psychological well-being. Results showed that personality predicts scores on loneliness scale (lower Extraversion, Agreeableness and Emotional Stability), self-esteem scale (higher Extraversion and Emotional Stability), index of general affect (higher Extraversion and Emotional Stability), index of well-being (higher Emotional Stability) and psychological well-being (higher Extraversion and Emotional Stability).
