Influence of Black Fallow on Nitrate Leaching

A stationary field trial, with 10 lysimeters installed at a depth of 80 cm, was set up in 1996 on drained Stagnosol in the vicinity of Popova˜ a (central Croatia). The lysimeters had no lateral sides (zero-tension pan lysimeters). The paper presents the investigation results obtained in the...

The lysimeters had no lateral sides (zero-tension pan lysimeters). The paper presents the investigation results obtained in the period from 1996 to 1999 with special emphasis on the results obtained in the treatment with black fallow. The trial included the following treatments: 1. Check 2. N0 PK 3. N100 PK 4. N150 PK 5. N200 PK 6. N250 PK 7. N250 PK+Phosphogypsum 8. N250 PK+Zeolite+CaCO3 9. N300 PK, and 10. Black fallow. Phosphogypsum (12 t ha -1 ) and zeolite tuff with CaCO3 (3 t ha -1 ) were applied prior to basic soil tillage in 1996. Soil tillage commonly applied to field crops in this region involves ploughing to a depth of 30 cm, disc-harrowing (15 cm) and seedbed preparation. In the treatment with black fallow, all tilling practices were the same as in other trial treatments, including also supplementary tillage practices. The main difference in soil tillage between trial plots with test crops and plots under fallow was supplementary disc-harrowing of black fallow in the growing season, aimed at maintaining the areas weedless. According to the results for the first four trial years, the total amount of nitrogen leached in all trial treatments ranged between 36 and 257 kg ha -1 NO3 - N, depending on the nitrogen rate applied. In these four years, 90 kg ha -1 NO3 - N was leached in the black fallow variant. These results indicate a relatively high loss of soil nitrates under black fallow, partly due to intensive mineralization of organic matter as a consequence of disc-harrowing, and partly due to the absence of vegetational cover.
